TEAM BOBYN are sad to announce the retirement of veteran domestique Downhiller Gleb "The Bread" Polischuk. One of the few riders within TB who have secured 3 or more race win in their career. A solid, loyal and dependable rider.
Born in Krememchuk, central Ukraine. His mother worked in a local Police Unit and his father was a baker - hence the name. A quiet unspoken man, he was proud of his Ukrainian roots and wore his hair in the Zaporizhzhyan Cossack way. An acadenically bright kid and able athlete who enjoyed cycling around the flats of Central Ukraine. He moved to Kyiv when he finished schooling and entered Taras Shenchenko University.
He contniued his interest in cycling and join a number of local cycling camps. It was at one of the summer camps organised by the great TB rider Ivan Bugeyev during a cycling tour of Carpathia that the cycling skills of Polischuk were discovered quite by accident.
He was quickly signed up by TB in S57 at the older age of 23 and he immediately formed part of the trupe of downhillers under Bugayev's tutelege.
Polischuk's first two years were spent finding his way around the team and supporting Bugayev. HOwever in S59 Polischuk became a household name by securing his first win in the Oiartzun - Irun and 4 placement and also 2 caps for the NT. Injuries prevented Polischuk to making an impression the following season but in S61 and S62 he again set the scene alight with another win and season best performance of 952nd and a best performance in the WTC - 8th in Zurich in S61 which contributed to Ukraine's joint WT win that season.
THe departure of Bugayev in S62 was a bit blow for Polischuk who had formed a strong bond with his tutor and his performances started to wane although in S64 he did pick up another third and final win. however he was never really able to push on from his excellent peak of S59-S61. As the downhill contingent age, Polischuk agreed to hang up his pedals and fatre some long negotiation (he wanted to bake bread) TB are pleased to stay that polischuk has agreed to stay on as Coach.
